Affixes

Present

n. an additional element placed at the beginning or end of a root, stem, or word, or in the body of a word, to modify its meaning.

Manipulate

Using a pocket chart, let's manipulate some of the words from All Are Welcome by Alexandra Penfold and Suzanne Kaufman.

Readers should ask themselves:

  • Do I use prefixes and suffixes to figure out the meaning of a word I don't know?

Practice

Assess

Beginner-Have the students complete the word sort as an assessment.  

                                                         

Intermediate-Administer a color-coded spelling assessment.  Students can choose two colors.  The teacher dictates the word and the students have to spell the word showing the root word and affix.
